Recommended book: Woman as a healer

A fascinating account over the centuries, of women  in their role as healers, by Jeanne Achtenberg, (Woman as a healer: a panoramic survey of the healing activities of women from prehistoric times to the present; Shambala books, 1991).

The book sheds light on a number of culturally and socially defined 'taboo' topics regarding health, childbirth and medicine; it builds a culturally and historically informed understanding of the role of women in medicine and the origin of medicinal practices that are still valid today, such as position of gynecological examination/childbirth (p 128).
